Combating Global Warming

By Tiffany Ann

There are many things you can do to help protect our environment and combat global warming. A lot of which are inexpensive, easy, and will save you money as well!

I work for an environmental organization, and while out talking to people I have discovered that many people don’t realize how easy it is to make a difference. Many people are stuck in the mindset that if they aren’t rich, or they don’t have a lot of time, then they can’t do anything to help out. Or they feel that if they can’t do much they shouldn’t even bother. The reality is that there are many low cost and quick actions you can do, and even the smallest amount makes a big difference!

Join Non-Profit Organizations
Non-profit organizations devote their time to research of the issues, informing the public, development of renewable energy sources, and putting pressure on law makers.
The best way to support these organizations is to give a donation, even if it is a small amount- every bit helps. A great way to give is monthly; try $5-$10 a month. (That's 1-2 coffee house coffees or 1-2 packs of cigarettes a month)
If you can't donate, that is alright, they usually will have other ways you can help them out.

Check out the non-profit organizations I have linked to.

Sign Petitions
Many organizations have simple petitions you can sign. Every voice matters, we need to let our leaders know what topics we care about.

Recycle
It is just as easy to throw a soda can in the trash as it is to throw it in a recycling bin- so why not recycle?
Many cities offer weekly curbside pick-up.
If your school or workplace does not have a recycling system, try to get them to start one up.

Drive Less
Walk, ride your bike, carpool, or use public transportation. When you do drive make your trips shorter and less frequent. Instead of going to the grocery store across town, go to the one a few blocks down. Instead of going out, dropping off your kids, coming home, going out again to hit up the mall, coming home, then going out to get dinner do it all in one trip.

Eco-friendly Lighting
Switching just one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. And it saves you money as well!
The compact fluorescent light bulbs are inexpensive, and the more bulbs you switch out the more you will be saving.

Turn Down the Heat
You can save around 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year simply by lowering the temperature on your thermostat by two degrees in the winter and raising it by two degrees in the summer.

Turn Off Your Lights
Don't waste energy by leaving lights on while you are not in the room. If you are doing something that requires minimal lighting use candles instead!

Print Documents on Recycled Paper
It will help save trees and you will be supporting eco-friendly products.

Use Less Hot Water
Wash your clothes in cold or warm water instead. Install a low flow showerhead and take quicker showers. Wash dishes by hand in a dishpan instead of using a dishwasher.

Don’t Throw Away Unwanted Items
Have a yard sale or donate unwanted clothes, bedding, house wares, ect to local thrift stores, charities, and homeless shelters. You’ll be doing your part to keep these items out of landfills and help out your community.

Install Solar Panels
This is expensive, but if you have the funds it is a great way to combat global warming. And it pays for itself after 10 years. Heating your water with solar power is a good start, and cheaper than running your electricity on solar power.

Harvest Rainwater
Instead of watering your yard with a house, set up some rain collection barrels. 40% of water consumption can be accounted for in residential irrigation. The collection of rainwater helps reduce the high demand for domestic water.

Encourage Others
Tell your family, friends, neighbors, classmates, co-workers, or anyone else about the information you have just learned, encourage them to change atleast one aspect of their lifestyle to a more eco-friendly alternative. Get involved, take action, and spread the word.
